0

Broaden your sailing horizons this summer! If you want a taste of something different, why not cruise the Swedish archipelago? Fly to Stockholm and spend a couple of days exploring the stylish and civilised city that offers great shopping, restaurants and hotels.

Stockholm Panorama

Stay: Berns. Well placed near the Opera House, best shops and nightlife, everyone from Robbie Williams to the Dalai Lama has checked in here.

Eat: The Swedes have a passion for coffee and they even have their own verb for spending time in cafes: fika. There are good cafes and bars everywhere, so take a pew and soak up the local atmosphere alfresco. When it’s time for something a little more substantial, head to Bakfickan where they serve the Swedish classics such as meatballs in gravy with mashed potatoes.

Shopping: Stockholm is an excellent shopping destination with many stylish shops and boutiques where you’ll be able to find the latest Scandinavian designs.

Sailing the Stockholm Archipelao

Once you’ve trended out in Stockhom it’s time to hit the high seas of Stockholm’s famous archipelago. With over 24,000 islands there’s enough to keep you busy for several months, if you can escape the office for that long! Some of the islands are uninhabited while others boast beautiful manor estates where you can sleep and eat if you’re looking to spend a night in ashore.

Sailing Through the Stockholm Archipelago

No where else on earth will you find such a richness of natural islands so close together. The islands sit in clean crisp waters offering beautiful scenery, nature and history. Unlike many other charter destinations, you will not have to worry about ‘the masses’. The sheer size of the archipelago means that you will find many peaceful places to anchor and spend a happy afternoon swimming and diving from the smooth rocky shores, alone and at one with nature.

The Swedish islands around Stockholm Cruise comfortably aboard the spacious Bavaria 50 Cruiser, easily accommodating 10 people in 5 cabins.  With three double cabins and two cabins comprising of bunks this is the perfect yacht for larger groups or those wanting extra space.

Sizzle in Sardinia this Summer

0
0

The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a European paradise. Located closer to Africa than to Italy, the turquoise sea and white sandy beaches of Sardinia rival anything you would see further afield. Add to this the local cooking of hearty pastas and pungent cheeses such as pecorino and smoked ricotta washed down with the local wines, and you have yourself the ideal charter destination.

cagliari_sailing_charter

Begin your Sardinia yacht charter from Portisco, a short taxi ride from Olbia airport, and immerse yourself in the Costa Smeralda, the Emerald Coast. This coastal resort is renowned as the playground of the rich and famous since the Aga Khan made it his playground in the 1960s. Sail north to La Maddelena National Park, scattered with islands and sandy beaches, including the famous spiaggia rosa, with pink sands, where peaceful anchorages await, or head for Corsica and the harbour town of Bonifacio for some French flair.

SailingInSardinia

If you’re a fan of bareboat sailing, set sail aboard the Jeanneau 57 which accommodates up to 12 guests in 5 cabins.

1_zoom

In order to whet your appetite we have come up with the following one week itinerary in Sardinia.

Starting in Portisco, head towards Tavolara (12 nautical miles). Anchor in the bay of Spalmatore with its beautiful beach and fantastic view. In the evening, head ashore to dine at the restaurant “Re di Tavolara”.

Day 2, from Tavolara to Isola Caprera (21 nautical miles). The island is part of the Maddalena Archipelago and home to the House of Garibaldi (which is now a museum).

On the third day, sail to Bonifacio (18 nautical miles). The beautiful harbour of Bonifacio is a sight in itself with its split limestone cliffs, as well as the baguettes and crepes of France which await!

Leaving Bonifacio, head to Isola Budeli (11 nautical miles). Part of the Maddalena Archipelago and famous for the spiaggia rosa.

Set sail to Isola Spargi (3 nautical miles). This part of the route offers many small bays with stunning transparent waters.

Explore the island with the same name as the archipelago, La Maddalena (3 nautical miles). The main town in the islands offers all kinds of shops and restaurants for your perusal.

Leave La Maddalena in the direction of Pervero (9 nautical miles). A stunning bay just behind Porto Cervo marina where you will find two sandy beaches against a backdrop of green hills dotted with the villas of the Costa Smeralda.

Finish your journey by sailing back to Portisco (5 nautical miles), when it is time to head home!

Ready to Bask in the Bahamian Sun?

Offering year round sunshine and steeped in history, the Bahamas is one of our favourite charter spots.  Follow in the steps of Christopher Columbus who first made landfall in the New World here, pirates who used the islands as a haven in the 1600s and where British loyalists made their homes following the American Revolution.  With 29 islands, 661 cays and nearly 2400 islets surrounded by clear turquoise water, it is a sailor’s paradise.  Located just 100 miles off the Florida coast and a two hour flight from New York you can find yourself relaxing on a warm teak deck in record time.

Sailing boats in the BahamasA Bahamas bareboat charter will begin on Great Abaco Island at Marsh Harbor and serves as the gateway to the stellar sailing grounds the islands offer.  The Abacos chain is formed in a boomerang shape and stretches nearly 130 miles from Walkers Cay in the north, to Hole-in-the-Wall in the south, which gives you plenty to explore in beautifully sheltered conditions.

The Bahamas are not just sun and history, there is plenty of wildlife for the budding naturalist to enjoy.  There are more than 200 species of birds, including the Green Bahamian Parrot, and the islands are lush with vegetation such as Pines, Madeira and Coppish; astonishing ferns and vines, and wildflowers such as Oleander and Stalked Orchids.6a00d8341c9ce753ef017d42404dcd970c-450wiThe best way to explore the Bahamas is a-board a catamaran meaning you can take advantage of the shallow cruising grounds.  Our current catamaran of choice is the Lagoon 450 offered in both a 4 cabin layout and owner version layout.  Replacing the hugely popular Lagoon 440, the 450 retains all of its irreplaceable qualities whilst benefitting from important improvements in terms of safety, performance and cruising comfort.  The standard layout is perfect for groups of 8, whilst the owner version is suited to smaller groups looking for extra space. The large cockpit is a great place to congregate with your crew for those lazy lunches and evening sundowners.

Super Sailing to be Had in the BVI

The winter months can be long and tedious but with daily flights to the Caribbean, chasing the sun has never been so easy.  A favourite destination for the Boatbookings team is the British Virgin Islands.  With line of sight navigation and short sailing distances between each island, this is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

marina_cay_bvi_charter

We’ve come up with the following nine day itinerary for the perfect sailing adventure and have a selection of yachts in the BVI for you to follow it on:

Day 1:  Arrive at the marina for embarkation and get acquainted with the local rum.

Day 2:  Head to Norman Island; great places to eat and drink including the infamous Willy T schooner.

Day 3:  The Baths / Gorda Sound.  Swim in the warm waters of The Baths and body board at Devil’s beach.

Day 4:  Mosquito Island, Prickly Pear Island and Necker Island all lie off Virgin Gorda.  Sandy beaches and crystal clear waters await.

Day 5:  The Dogs – these tiny islets off the north short of Virgin Gorda offer excellent snorkelling.

Day 6:  Monkey Point / Cane Garden Bay.  Monkey Point on Guana Island is a great place for spotting sea turtles and swimming with exotically coloured shoals of fish. In the evening, soak up the Caribbean vibe at the barefoot beach bars and restaurants along Cane Garden Bay

Day 7:  Jost Van Dyke / Green Cay – snorkel with snappers and angel fish at Green Cay before spending the evening at Foxy’s Bar on Jost Van Dyke.

Day 8:  Peter Island – this is the largest private island in the BVIs and includes beaches such as Big Reef Bay and Honeymoon Beach.  If you’re feeling a little windswept head to the Luxury Resort and Spa for a series of treatment to make you ‘city ready’ again.

Day 9:  Disembark at Tortola.

bvi-4

Not sure which yacht to take?  We recommend the beautiful Jeanneau 53 which can accommodate up to twelve people (although we would suggest ten maximum for the ideal comfort) in five cabins.  Numerous deck hatches and portholes flood the inside with light, highlighting the rich materials used throughout; leather, stainless steel and finely varnished woodwork. A luxurious saloon offers a comfortable dining area and well-equipped kitchen for the budding chef while on deck the large cockpit is the perfect place to sip on some Caribbean inspired cocktails.

Fun & Frolics Sailing from Ft. Lauderdale

0

Ft. Lauderdale, sometimes known as the Venice of America for its extensive system of canals, is a sailing mecca and a superb destination for a bareboat catamaran charter.  Seminole Indians may have been the region’s first inhabitants but it is Major William Lauderdale that the city is named after.  During the Second Seminole War he led a group of Tennessee Volunteers into the area and built the New River Fort, the location of the city we know today.

GrFortLauderdaleSunrise_38420_2

Setting sail you will find the exciting sights and sounds of South Beach just a day sail away and stretching beyond is the natural beauty of the famous Florida Keys.  Visit Miami, Biscayne Bay, Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathan and Key West, sailing as far as Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas.  If that isn’t enough to keep you entertained, then you can always head east into The Bahamas with its extensive range of islands, cays and islets to explore.

5501186_orig

Ft. Lauderdale is not the only starting point along the Florida coastline.  Bareboat charter yachts can also be picked up from Miami or Key West.

Miami: The Miami base is located at Bayshore Landing Marina on the western shore of Biscayne Bay; within minutes of leaving the slip you can be sailing away to freedom.

Key West: The Florida Keys extend over 125 miles and are often called ‘America’s Caribbean islands’. Known for their spectacular coral reefs, excellent marina facilities and quiet anchorages, the Keys make the perfect sailing destination for any charterer. With a tropical climate tempered by ocean breezes, this is a ‘year-round’ sailing destination.

With the glistening blue seas and endless sunshine, the best way to travel is aboard a catamaran.  Today’s recommendation is the Lagoon 440.  With 4 double cabins she can comfortably sleep up to 8 people and her expansive outside space is perfect for life in the open.  So kick back and enjoy a refreshing beverage with a Carl Hiaasen novel for entertainment – all set in Florida of course.

The Lagoon 440 is available for bareboat or skippered charters.  For further information, about bareboat catamaran rental Fort Lauderdale or elsewhere in the world, contact the team today.

Set Sail for St. Martin

0
0

First sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493, the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Martin is the smallest landmass in the world to be shared by two independent countries; France and Holland.  This leads to an interesting dual cultural personality where sophistication and a relaxed, easygoing style is woven into the fabric of every day life.  Offering world class restaurants, casual beach bars, legendary and sometimes infamous beaches, live music and a fascinating colonial history, this is the perfect destination for your next charter holiday.

st-martin-2

Here’s a brief rundown of places to see and things to do:

Marigot:  The capital of the island and where you start your charter, Marigot is a bustling port town dominated by a stone fort high up on the hill.  There is a distinctly European vibe to this town.

Fort Louis:  Constructed by the French on the orders of King Louis XVI, the fort was designed to protect Marigot from marauding British and Dutch pirates.  It’s been abandoned for centuries but it’s worth the hike up the hill just for the view.

Produce Market:  The produce market held on Marigot’s waterfront offers tropical fruits such as passionfruit and bananas as well as local root vegetable.  Stock up on these delicious delicacies before you set sail.

Grand Case:  Known as the ‘Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean’, eat to your heart’s content with a great view of Anguilla.

Orient Beach:  A perfect beach with white sand and snorkel friendly reefs offering restaurants, bars and water sports.

Le Galion:  The quieter neighbour of Orient Beach, this is a fantastic spot which remains untouched by development as it is protected by the national marine reserve.  Bayside Riding Club is located nearby for those that feel like going for a gallop along the beach.

Butterfly Farm:  This magical outdoor museum is well worth a visit.  Learn about chrysalis stages and watch how cocoons form while butterflies flit about. You can visit as often as you like on one ticket.

Oyster Pond:  The Dutch – French border slices straight across Oyster Pond, a sunken bay nestling between two jagged hills.

St. Martin Archaeological Museum:  The museum covers everything from the Arawak period to island fashion in the 1930s, featuring period photography, historical displays and artefacts from the pre-Colombian period.

st-martin-5

The best way to bareboat charter St. Martin is aboard this beautiful Catana 55 offering 6 cabins and 6 heads.  Perfect for both bareboat and skippered charters, possibly with a hostess if you want to make things really luxurious.

big_catana-55---6-c-main19098

The sailing conditions in St. Martin mean that this is a destination for the more experienced sailor offering a great mix of island hopping and exciting blue water cruising that should keep the whole crew happy.

Join Us This Winter in the British Virgin Islands

With steady trade winds, calm currents, protected bays and pirate-ship bars, the British Virgin Islands is one of the world’s sailing hot spots and, if we had our way, where we’d spend every winter!  With so many Tortola boat charters to choose from, you’ll keep on coming back year after year.

bvi-2

Here are top things to do and see in the BVI:

Walking Tour of Sage Mountain National Park:  Enjoy a guided walking tour of the national park, boasting the highest point in the Virgin Islands.  A bird lover’s paradise with many species inhabiting the area and fantastic views across the seas.

Callwood Rum Distillery:  The oldest continuously operated distillery in the Eastern Caribbean.  For more than 300 years the Callwood family has been producing Arundel rum. There’s a small store where you can purchase rum to drink on board like a true pirate.

The Baths:  This collection of sky-high boulders is the BVI’s most popular tourist attraction.  The rocks are volcanic lava leftovers from up to 70 millions years ago and form a series of grottoes that flood with sea water.  A unique swimming opportunity.

White Bay: The clue is in the title.  Crazy white sand and good time bars – what more does one need?

Salt Island:  The RMS Rhone’s final resting place after smashing against the rocks during the 1867 hurricane.  This is one of the Caribbean’s best wreck dives.

Anegada:  Just 12 miles from the other islands but like another planet.  A flat desert landscape with Flamingos wading in the salt ponds, this is well worth a visit.  Eating Anegada lobster is a rite of passage and every restaurants has them on the menu, usually grilling them on the beach in a converted oil drum.

homepage-anegada

With many boats to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice!  Our personal recommendation for a BVI charter is always a Catamaran due to the great deck space for sun bathing and a large open cockpit for al fresco dining. This makes Catamarans the perfect choice for a destination where outside living is the norm thanks to the stunning surroundings.

The Lagoon 450 is a great choice with 4 double cabins and 4 heads offering comfortable accommodation for up to 8 people.  The yacht has the added advantage of two forward skipper cabins meaning you can take 10 people on board for those with larger groups.

m_91AU8597

The BVI is a magical place to sail. With easy deep-water island hops, line-of-sight navigation and plentiful sheltered anchorages it offers the ultimate stress free sailing experience for the novice and ocean racer alike.  Beautiful white sand beaches and a great selection of laid-back bars and restaurants make the evenings ashore an utter joy.

Water visibility is 100 -130ft which is ideal for snorkelling with hawksbill turtles, manta rays, eagle rays and trumpet fish to spot.  It is also a perfect environment for kayaking and paddle boarding. Interested? Come join us.

Tales of Tortola

0
0

The history of the Virgin Islands, and in particular Tortola, is a fascinating and chequered one involving famous explorers, murderous pirates the slave trade and many changes in ownership. Even the origin of its name is up for debate. Many claim that Christopher Columbus, who discovered the archipelago of the Virgin Islands named the island Tortola after the Spanish word for Turtle Dove. The truth is much less romantic. He actually named it Santa Ana and its present name came after the later Dutch settlers named it Ter Tholen, after an island off the Netherlands. The British colonisers, not well known for their grasp of foreign language, changed it to Tortola.

BVI BlogThe BVIs is the destination everyone dreams about, so set off on your sailboat Tortola is the biggest Island in the British Virgin Island group, is a volcanic and therefore mountainous island 19km long. Covered in forest and surrounded by incredible, white sandy beaches this island should be your first port of call to explore when you pick up your bareboat.

tortola map blog

Visit the northern beaches for swimming, snorkelling and diving or get off the boat, stretch your legs and take a walk in the beautiful Sage Mountain National Park. If you fancy finding your inner pirate why not visit the Callwood’s Cane Garden Bay Rum Distillery on the west side of the island. Famed not only for being 400 years old but also because it’s (apparently) impossible to get a hangover from drinking it. We recommend drinking only in moderation!

sailing boat bvi blog

Whatever else you decide to do in Tortola, you must sample the local fare. Try the johnnycake, saltfish and peas and rice. A local favourite is the misleadingly named Fungi, which has absolutely nothing to do with mushrooms and everything to do with cornmeal and okra.

There is so much to do and see in Tortola that you may forget to go any further! Sit on your chartered bareboat at anchor and soak up the beauty and tranquility of the Caribbean at its best.

Don’t forget to share your Tortola experiences with us on Facebook and contact us for more information

Captivated By Croatia

Lately, I have been asking a lot of my boating friends what they think about sailing in Croatia. All of them without fail say that it is the best place they have ever been on a boat, and these are people that have sailed all over the world. There is a general consensus that Croatia has it all, so read on to see if this could be your summer charter destination!

croatia1

The Adriatic coastline of Croatia is dotted with over a thousand islands which provide safe anchorages in pristine waters, surrounded by incredible natural beauty and historic medieval villages.

Rovinj sunset

The dramatic and stunning Dubrovnik is the ideal starting point from which to start your bareboat charter in Croatia. Stroll the ancient city walls and visit the UNESCO listed old town, before boarding your charter yacht and heading out into the blue.

dubrov1

Cruise towards Sipan Luka for a first taste of the Croatian island experience and explore the interior by bike or foot. Spend the next few days stopping at beautiful anchorages, swimming in the crystal clear waters, and visiting old villages and national parks. Don’t miss a visit to Korcula, famed as much for being the birth place of Marco Polo as it is for being one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic. Korcula town has been dubbed  “Little Dubrovnik” for its medieval domed buildings and city walls.

Start your bareboat charter in Split, the main Dalmatian city, founded in the third century, and let us guide you to Hvar, stopping in the islands of Vis and Lastovo.

Croatia has something for everyone when it comes to yacht charter. You can hire a crewed motor boat or catamaran, or jump aboard a bareboat gulet or sailboat. Eat in sophisticated restaurants, or have a picnic at anchor in a quiet bay. Hike to visit stunning waterfalls or stroll down paved shopping  streets. l’Ile de Bareboat

The French call it l’Ile de Beauté (the beautiful island) and although this is an obvious choice of moniker it is also an accurate one. Its geographical position and varied landscape make it an ideal destination to bareboat charter Corsica. Corsica lies alongside the west, Tuscan coast of Italy, 200 km south of mainland France and just above the Italian island of Sardinia. What better playground for a holiday on a bareboat?

Calvi-sunset

Without leaving Corsica itself and heading off into Italian waters, there is enough to see, experience and taste cruising around this beautiful island, to keep everyone on board happy for a long time.

Chartering a bareboat in Ajaccio is the best and easiest option as Ajaccio is the biggest bareboat base and is close to the biggest international airport on the island, getting to Corsica is easy from many major European cities. Ajaccio is the birthplace to the most famous short man on the planet and you can visit the home of Napoleon Bonaparte while visiting the picturesque old town and filling up your charter boat with local treats such as cakes and pastries made with chestnut flour and traditional charcuterie like coppa, lonzu, figatellu and don’t forget the donkey salami!

Corsica-coast

I would suggest a cruise along the stunning west coast of the island, calling into ports and visiting towns  from the northern end of the island to the south like St Florent, Calvi, Propriano and the stunning Bonifacio.

St Florent is a picturesque fishing town brimming with restaurants and cafes along the waterfront. If you want to buy or taste some of the incredible wines that Corsica has to offer then take a trip inland to Corsica’s well known wine region Patrimonio.

StFlorent

After roaming the chic streets of St Florent and a cruise south, stopping off in beautiful bays with stunning mountainous backdrops, anchor in the bay of Calvi and come ashore to explore the old medieval city. Corsica is well known for its interesting history, having been conquered and reconquered by most civilisations from everywhere in the Mediterranean basin over the centuries. Calvi is a great place to soak up some of the past.

Propriano, a fishing harbour in the Valinco Gulf, is another potential base to charter a bareboat. Surrounded by some of the best beaches on the island, it is a great place for snorkelling and lazing about at anchor on your bareboat catamaran with a good book.

CatamaranCorsica

Sailing into Bonifacio is something you will never forget! Strategically built on top of steep, limestone cliffs, the only entrance to the harbour is through a narrow opening in the cliff walls. Sail through the limestone corridor and the harbour is revealed tucked away below the city, a veritable safe harbour.

Bonifacio

Corsica is a destination with something for everyone. Have a look at our Corsica itinerary to get some ideas and help guide you, or contact us for more information. Why don’t you share your experiences in Corsica with us here on Facebook?

Sshhh… 5 Best Kept Secrets in the Greek Islands

0

We have all heard of them…Santorini, Mykonos, Lefkas and Rhodes, but when you’re sailing in Greece, you can explore the best kept secrets of these stunning isles.

greek sunset

Despite being the location for the film Mamma Mia, Skopelos, in the Sporades Island group has managed to maintain an authentic and relaxed atmosphere. Unlike many of the other islands in Greece, the beaches here are often pebbly but remain picturesque and quiet, surrounded by green hills covered in ancient monasteries and olive groves.

skopeloss

One of the most southern islands in the Greek archipelago, Karpathos is free of charter-tour-tourism and has all the rustic and authentic charm that that implies. Karpathos is mountainous, and it is a treat to venture into the steep interior from where you can look down at the secluded coves and inviting waters below. Tucked away on the rugged east coast Achata, Kyra Panagia and Apella are three hidden swimming coves that are not to be missed! Drop anchor in your bareboat catamaran and enjoy the tranquility.

greek village

Hugging the Turkish coastline is the tiny and very, very pretty island of Kastellorizo. Visit the spectacular Blue Cave and wander amongst the pastel coloured, neo-classical houses in the only village on the island, also conveniently named Kastellorizo. This picturesque village is nestled into a sheltered horseshoe bay and a great place to relax in one of the many great, authentic restaurants.

greek house

If diving is your holiday sport of choice then it is hard to beat Chios for some great dive sites. The waters here are a vivid blue that seem to last forever as you dive. Head towards the Great Wall, a 30 metre underwater cliff bursting with bright coral of all colours. This island, the fifth largest of the Greek islands, is steeped in history. Tie up your chartered yacht in port and get ashore to explore some of its magic.

Marathonisi is otherwise known as Turtle Island, not because of the fact that it is actually shaped like a turtle, but because it is a laying site for the incredible, giant loggerhead turtles. These magnificent creatures swim for thousands of miles to return to their birthplace and lay their eggs on two of the main beaches of the island. Marathonisi is uninhabited so don’t expect to come ashore and eat in a local Taverna. This island is an untouched paradise.

The Amalfi Coast is not only one of the most amazing destinations to see, it is one of the best destinations to be seen, and sailing the Amalfi coast will not disappoint!

Amalfi Coast

This naturally beautiful Italian idyll is known as much for its cliff top villages overlooking stunning clear blue waters as well as for the rich and famous that patronise the area.

Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997, the Amalfi coastline and surrounding islands are the perfect destination for a bareboat sailing holiday. The Italian authorities have done a good job at maintaining the area and its charm. There are strict regulations in place to ensure that while you are relaxing on deck with a cold drink in one hand and a book in the other anchored in a beautiful bay, there will be no whining of jet skis or motor boats racing past you pulling banana boats of screaming holiday makers. These aquatic activities can be indulged in further up, or down the coast,  but on the Amalfi coast you can enjoy the calm.

Fig bust

Why not pick up your bareboat catamaran in Salerno (50 minutes from Naples airport) and head west towards Amalfi and  Positano, arguably the most picturesque of all the Amalfi villages. Anchor off and explore the steep cobbled  streets, lined with fashionable boutiques and quaint cafés.

Positano

Cruise along the coast and out to Capri, and visit the island famous for its mix of rugged beauty and Hollywood glamour. Explore it’s  secret coves and grottoes, find a quiet spot to drop anchor, swim in the warm azur water and soak up the Capri sunshine!

Capri

Wherever you end up on the Amalfi coast there is much to explore with something for everyone to enjoy. Rich in history, natural wonders and fantastic, traditional cuisine, this is without a doubt, unbeatable bareboat charter destination.

Sailing Aeolian Islands is a treat not to be missed! Just to the north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea, lies this archipelago of 7 volcanic islands: Vulcano, Lipari, Filicudi, Alicudi, Salina, Panarea and Stromboli. A bareboating paradise, the Aeolian Islands remain relatively untouched and have retained a feeling of a remote wilderness despite having been invaded and conquered for millennia by the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans, to name a few. The Islands are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Board your chartered bareboat, stock up on the incredible foods and wines that Sicily has to offer and head out into the blue towards Vulcano. Try one of the famous mud baths here before stopping off in Lipari, the largest of the 7 islands and only separated from Vulcano by a narrow channel. Lipari is famous for the pumice and obsidian that is still extracted from the island . Eat in one of the fantastic local restaurants before dropping anchor and sailing out to the outlying islands.

stromboliStromboli is probably the most famous of all the islands, and what you see is just the tip of the massive live volcano that rises from the seabed. If you time it right you can sit at anchor and watch this natural wonder spewing ash and smoke, incredible at night!

Alicudi is completely uninhabited with impressive cliff walls that rise out of the water and fantastic anchorages.

Do yourself a favour and explore these understated islands with their black sandy beaches, quiet coves, varied but stunning landscapes and lively villages with colourful fishing boats.

If you are looking into a bareboat charter holiday in the Caribbean but you are not sure where to go, let me guide you, or at least help you to narrow it down to three!

Let’s start in Abacos with a bareboat charter in the Bahamas.  Just 112 kilometres east of Palm Beach, Florida lies the Bahamas, a sailing paradise of warm breezes, white sandy beaches and colonial houses nestled amongst the palm trees.

bahamas

Pick up your charter yacht in Marsh Harbour and explore the many islands with peaceful harbours that make up the Abacos. The snorkelling and diving here is hard to beat with walls of coral, teeming with shoals of beautifully coloured fish lying just under the sea of Abaco. Don’t leave without visiting the Pelican Cays National Park or the string of stunning sandy cays such as Man-O-War Cay, Treasure Cay, Fowl Cay, and Green Turtle Cay. Have a look at some itineraries here.

The British Virgin Islands or BVI is one of the world’s top destinations for yacht chartering. When you bareboat charter in the BVI, you are in for a treat!

The steady trade winds and the line of sight navigation between the stunningly lush islands that make up this group of islands are just two of the reasons that draw sailors here from all over the globe.

Some of the must-see spots are :

Anegada Island. A coral atoll with over 300 wrecks for diving, flocks of pink flamingos and deserted pink shell beaches. Don’t leave without trying the islands tastiest namesake, the Anegada lobster.

White Bay on Jost van Dyke is home to the renowned Soggy Dollar Beach Bar. Take a load off in one off the many hammocks and sip on a cocktail.

Sandy Spit in Green Cay is literally just that. A mound of sand rising from the water, its a great place for a picnic while out sailing.

For wild and untouched beauty you cannot beat a bareboat charter in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Of the 32 islands and cays that make up this island group, only 9 are inhabited.

Mountainous and lush, covered in thick rain forest with steep precipices and deep gorges, there is a lot to explore on St Vincent which is also home to the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere.

Bequia

Sail off into the crystal blue waters and discover the beautiful beaches and tranquillity of Bequia, Mystique, Petit St Vincent, Young Island, Canouan, Union Island, Mayreau and Palm Island. Our Top 3 Mediterranean Charter Destinations

The Mediterranean is one of the most popular yacht charter destinations in the world with many diverse landscapes and cultures to explore. Here are our top three yacht charter destinations in the Mediterranean Sea.

palma beach

The Balearic Islands which include Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza are a veritable playground for sailing and cruising. Mallorca, the biggest island is a great place to start. Pick up your yacht from Palma and look back at the city with its impressive cathedral and Almudaina Palace dominating the skyline of this ancient Roman city. From there you can head out to explore the world famous beaches and coves that line the coastline of this varied and cultured island.

If glamour, beach clubs and dancing are more your style then Ibiza is for you! This island is famous for its nightlife, chic boutiques and restaurants but this pine covered island is also littered with tranquil coves where you can wile away lazy afternoons.

from

Just 6 kilometres south of Ibiza is the small island of Formentera perfect for a day trip to lunch in one of the many beach restaurants or lie on the pristine beaches its famed for.

antibes

The French Riviera or Côte d’Azur really needs no introduction. Renowned for being the destination of choice for the rich and famous there are some little known spots here where you can get away from it all!

Porquerolles island just off the picturesque seaside town of Hyères is well worth a visit. There are no cars allowed here and so you can enjoy and explore this tranquil and beautiful spot by renting bicycles and taking in the sounds of the cicadas and the sights of this nature reserve measuring just 7 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide.

monaco

From here you can sail along the coast towards Marseille, taking in the beautiful, rocky Calanques and stopping into the small seaside town of Cassis, or you could head in the opposite direction and soak up some of the glamour and sophistication of St Tropez, Cannes and Monaco.

positano

My final pick for top places to bareboat charter in the Mediterranean is the iconic Italian Amalfi Coast. This rocky and mountainous coastline is rich in history, culture and gastronomy. The towns and villages of the Amalfi cling to the coastline and each has a very distinct feel. The next village along from the biggest town in this area, Salerno, (and a good place to start your charter)  is Vieri Sul Mare, you can moor in the marina here and take in the buildings which are adorned with bright and unique ceramics and brickwork for which this town is famous for producing.

The towns of Cetane, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Amalfi, Praiano and Positano are all unique and should be visited and explored with time to visit the local roman ruins, the stunning cathedrals and of course to wander the streets, sample the local delicacies and relax in the many fabulous bars and restaurants the region has to offer.

capri

A sailing charter on the Amalfi Coastline would not be complete without a visit to the island of Capri just a short cruising distance away.

Have You Missed the Boat?

You have been busy with work and life in general and have not given a thought to how you are going to spend your precious summer holiday. The weather has warmed up and suddenly a Mediterranean sailing holiday seems like just what you need to get away from it all! Although it is true that June is a little bit late to book your bareboat yacht charter for the summer,  there are some great deals and some destinations that will be easier than others to find the right boat. All is not lost….

franceFirstly, forget chartering from the small charter bases such as those on small islands and focus on the larger centres where you will still be able to find an available yacht.

In Greece there is still a good selection of available yachts from the main bases of Athens, Skiathos and Lefkas.

church

Pick up your yacht in Athens and explore the islands of the Saronic Gulf, this is a good choice if you want to avoid the Meltemi winds that can make sailing pretty exciting in other parts of the Greek Islands in July and August. Visit Hydra where cars are prohibited and you can stroll around the island visiting monasteries and historical buildings with just the sounds of crickets and the water lapping the shore to guide you. Visit the temple of Aphaia on the island of Aegina and stop at Epidaurus to watch a play in the world famous ancient theatre.

Charter from Lefkas and sail and explore the islands of the Ionian Sea. These lush and mountainous islands which include Corfu, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Paxos and Zakynthos are known for their crystal clear waters and sandy beaches.

Head to the northwest Aegean Sea and sail in the Sporades Islands picking up your yacht in Skiathos. Most of the islands which make up this archipelago are uninhabited and this is a fantastic destination to sail in a marine park famous for being the home of the Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Croatia

The beautiful Dalmatian Coast of Croatia is another destination where there are still some great deals to be had for the summer of 2016. Charter from Split and Trogir where you can still pick up a great yacht and head out to the party island of Hvar or cruise off into the National Parks for some peace and quiet and moor up in a tranquil bay.

Hvar

The French Riviera is famous for its chic and jet-set image but don’t be fooled. Monaco, Cannes and St Tropez are all must see destinations if you are chartering on the Riviera but there are also many hidden and quiet coves, islands and ports to pull into. Charter from Hyeres and sail to the beautiful Porquerolles Island and visit the Calanques, calling into Cassis to explore this sleepy village and stock up on the local Bandol wine.

calanques

There are many great potential starting points from which to charter on the French Riviera, from the historic Marseille to the yachting hub of Antibes or St Raphael, a stone’s throw from St Tropez, get in contact with us and we will help you to find a charter yacht for this summer in any of these destinations.
